Out of stock or off shelf

An out-of-stock means the store has none. An off-shelf means the store has it, but not where the shopper is looking. The fixes are different. Out-of-stocks need a better order or delivery. Off-shelf gaps need replenishment from the stockroom, or a corrected planogram.

How to measure it

OSA = listed lines found on the shelf ÷ listed lines checked × 100.

Illustrative figures. A rep checks 40 listed lines in a store and finds 37 on the shelf. OSA for that visit is 92.5%. Tracked across visits and stores, it shows which lines and outlets miss most often.
