What a delivery round is
A round is a fixed sequence of calls repeated on a schedule: daily, a few days a week or weekly. The customers, the order of the stops and the rough timings stay much the same from one week to the next. That repetition is what separates a round from one-off deliveries.
What a roundsman does
The job covers far more than the drive.
- Delivers the regular order, adjusted for any changes the customer asked for.
- Sells extra lines from the van where the round carries spare stock.
- Takes the next order or notes changes to the standing order.
- Collects payment, or leaves it on account.
- Brings back crates, trays and other returnable packaging.
When the round lives in one head
Long-serving roundsmen often know every gate code, every quirk and every customer’s usual order. That knowledge is valuable, and it is also a risk. When the round only exists in one driver’s memory, holidays and sickness become a problem for the whole depot.
