How to calculate OTIF
OTIF = orders delivered on time and in full ÷ total orders × 100.
Illustrative figures. A distributor makes 200 deliveries in a week. 184 arrive within the agreed window, and 190 arrive complete. But only 178 are both on time and complete. OTIF is 178 ÷ 200, which is 89%. Note that OTIF is not on-time rate multiplied by in-full rate: the failures overlap.
Decide the definitions first
OTIF figures only compare if the rules behind them are written down.
- On time against what: the customer’s receiving window, a promised day, or a booked slot.
- In full by order or by line: one missing line can fail the whole order, or count as one line in many.
- Substitutions: whether an agreed swap counts as in full.
- Customer-caused failures: whether a closed site or a refused drop counts against you.
Measuring by customer and route
A single OTIF figure hides where the misses happen. Split it by route to find rounds that run late, and by customer to find accounts with tight windows. Split the in-full failures by cause: short picks, out of stock, damage in transit.
